Format the drive (quick not full), delete and re-make the partition on the drive, run chkdsk and disk cleanup on the C: drive (primary windows drive the externals are connected to) I have also recently added a 160GB disk on the SATA bus. So I hit reset and checked out system events, found this error. I removed one of those extension USB cables and the problem was solved. 3x1.5m USB cables seem to be too much, 2x1.5m is ok. The server would then slow to a crawl and more or less had to be rebooted. This warning is by design.

You get the impression that the drives will be dying soon, but the pre-failure tech with HP shows they are fine. When seeing those errors on an isolated XP machine yesterday, we plugged the drive into a Windows 7 laptop. This event may occur even when the I/O operation is retried and is then successful. well then a theory that it's a driver "glitch" is rather plausible.
