I use the little tube of light machine oil that came with my beard trimmer to lubricate the motor shaft and free up the bushing. It worked! Ho7 Insurance Use only very little oil and spray away from the laser! Two screws on pressure plate removes it for easy access.Works ok now thanks all. I got the fault when my 5 disc unit was 13 months old!!

I don't think it's worth the additional time it would take to swap out the motor.

Brought it to a shop, after parts & labour estimate it was not economically feasible to repair, so I bought a new player for half the repair cost. voila - a loose (lost?) disk is usually hiding out in there.. HO7 message on unit, and not playing any disc. Most likely the high-end units have it like the S97 because you mentioned that player you obtained (model unknown) didn't have it.
I can defaintely hear the brushless motors because they are high-pitched. Just a quick update, I posted this in 2008, it's now 2014, and I have had no problems with this player, since removing the spring., some years ago.! The unit does not lift out 'as advertised.' I get the impression that to get to the spindle bearing I need access to the bottom of the drive unit.
