An aside: If you don’t want to mess with IE for troubleshooting (especially if you suspect you are getting cached pages, due to IE’s super- aggressive caching), the best thing to this content I needed a stack trace to the screen and this allowed me to kill that generic 500 error. I turned on tracing but that didn't seem to give any useful information. Make sure that IUSR has access to your database, if you are using Windows Authentication, or use sa authentication with credentials in the querystring.

Thank you! Once I removed the ip address so the list was empty (which is what I have on another vista machine for comparison), localhost started working again. IIS 7 is returning a preconfigured 500 response body. By looking at the applicationHost.config file, I found out there is a in isapi filter section under each web site (Do not know how it got there).

I have installed IIS 6 on a windows 2003 server, which is just a member server with static IP address on a windows 2000 network. Excellent article, it helped me solve the problem in a flash.
